Barn Quilts by Debbie

Meet The Maker: Debbie Senter

Debbie is a California native who paints stunning barn quilts inspired by the peace and tranquility found within the forests of the Lost Sierra. Originally from Southern California, Debbie has called Plumas County home since 1985. After retiring from Feather River College she spent more of her time quilting, a tradition that she learned from her Grandmother. It was through that process that she became curious about the painted quilts she saw popping up around Plums and Sierra Counties. She began painting her own in 2009.

What exactly does it take to create a barn quilt? According to Debbie, crafting Barn Quilts involves a seemingly straightforward yet intricate process, I design my barn quilt using a pencil, ruler, and tape. I then paint them with exterior acrylic house paint, onto sign boards”, she explains. Debbies designs are often unique incorportating local flora and fauna including flowers, trees, bugs, and birds. Sometimes she teams up with local artists Trixie Hollyhox who will create a unique painting at the center of the quilt. Debbie's husband Guy, then lends a helping hand by framing some of these creations with Redwood and finishing them in a protective spar varnish, rendering them suitable for display both indoors and outdoors

When we asked Debbie what her favorite thing about the Lost Sierra is, she replied:

“I love the peace & tranquility of breathing our fresh air & living within the beautiful forests, lakes & streams of the Lost Sierra. Gardening, hiking with friends, visiting family and especially spending time with my 7 grandkids is how I fill my time!”
